You Do Not Have to Smile

About the Poem

Summa Health System Patient

You do not have to smile.

The world is not always shining.

You will be angry -

At yourself, at others.

Cling to it. Then let it go.

Drink the cup of love that each day allots.

You do not have to eat the bitter lemons given to you.

Spit them out, throw them back if you have to.

You do not have to swim the whole ocean alone.
Swim until you can go no longer - then, look up.
